The Arbitrary Commands feature is used for troubleshooting. If Itron determines that additional information or processing is needed to solve an issue with an endpoint, Itron will build an arbitrary command script to obtain the necessary data from the endpoint.
This feature is available for all Riva and Gen5 mesh and cellular gas and water endpoints and meters in both mobile and network mode.
Users must have Signed Authorization to run a script on an endpoint.
Process flow
-
After talking with the customer about the nature of the problem, Itron engineers create a script.
-
Itron customer service loads the script to the utility's Business Unit. Scripts can be seen in the FDM Server Client under Endpoint Configuration > selected endpoint > Riva or Network tab > Arbitrary Command Script File tab.
-
The Field Tools user synchronizes their Windows laptop (recommended) with the server to pull down the scripts.
Note: Testing has shown that long-running processes are more reliable on Windows devices with a USB cable than iOS or Android devices using Bluetooth.
-
With a USB cable connecting the laptop and the IMR, the Field Tools user opens a session with the endpoint, goes to Advanced Diagnostics > Arbitrary Commands, selects the script, and clicks Proceed.
-
After the script has completed, the Field Tools user synchronizes with the server again.
-
Itron engineers look at the Device Command Log to see the script's results.
